COMMENTS : The Globe In Morning Lane in Hackney is doing a magnificent job of promoting live jazz, and of attracting a loyal and grateful public.
The standard here is remarkably high for free entry events, and the bands play for longer here than at any of the other seasons. Most, if not all, of the bands which play here are regularly seen at the paid seasons in the South and Midlands.
The only negative side of the Globe is that it is a very small venue, and it does get packed out. As the management say on their advertising, get here early for a seat. The doors open at 11am, and I would definitely not want to arrive later than 12.
The atmosphere is excellent, and the fans here are highly appreciative of what they are hearing. You will almost certainly see dancers at regular intervals, despite the lack of room.
It does get a bit claustrophobic at times, but this is a cosy and enjoyable place to visit, and every serious jazz fan should try it at least once.
The big problem with the Globe is the total lack of publicity for the events. How do you find out what is happening at a season with no website and no publicity?

WHAT THE GLOBE IN MORNING LANE COULD DO TO IMPROVE : In terms of the bands booked, and the entertainment on offer, nothing. This is a superb season, and ridiculous value for money at free entry.
Some rows of seats at the back could be provided for people who don’t manage to get a seat round the tables.
The biggest improvement would be to set up a simple website so that people could see which bands are playing there. They are publicised in the paper Jazz Guide, but not everyone has access to that. It also cannot deal with last minute changes to the programme.
